The action

The project of the greenhouse will directly affect 127 children and youngsters with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 6-18 years old who are studying in the special school “Luigj Gurakuqi” in Tirana. The main aim of the action is to create a friendly learning environment for children and youngsters with intellectual disabilities and in addition to plant cultivation, it will also help them to build skills for life and the labor market. Our goal is not simply building a greenhouse but also empower children and youngsters with intellectual disabilities, enhance their mental and physical well-being and promote inclusion and volunteering for this target group. Having a greenhouse in their school premises will serve as an educational space where children and youngsters can gain skills in horticulture and floriculture, can practice daily life skills of care and interaction, and can fight the isolation by interacting in a new environment. Gardening can have many health benefits for people with disabilities, and provide a source of exercise, friendship, stimulation and relaxation. Our project will create an accessible, productive, and pleasant greenhouse for 127 children and youngsters with disabilities where they can grow Flowers, Greens, Spices, Vegetables, and Seedlings. The greenhouse measuring 200 m2 with a watering system, heating, lighting, ventilation, for full-cycle plant cultivation will be constructed in school premises. Polycarbonate material will be used for the greenhouse construction, based in its characteristics (shatter resistant and longer lasting) and is not breaking assuring the safety of the children. The school welcomes children who have multiple and different levels of intellectual disability, autism, Down Syndrome, behavioral disorders etc.
