Support to maternities to care for newborns and save lives – incubators for newborn babies

The action

The neonatal period / newborn, 0 ÷ 28 days of life, is the most fragile time for a baby to survive. In Albania, 7 out of 1,000  newborns do not survive. Around 80 % of child deaths under age of 5 occur during the first month of life. Quality of care standards along with adequate capacities of health personnel, infrastructure and adequate medical supplies are key to save newborn lives. UNICEF has supported the neonatology service in Tirana and regions with technical support to develop standard treatment protocols and build capacities of the health personnel working in maternity hospitals. UNICEF office in Albania in partnership with Credins foundation will provide incubators and other life-saving supplies to maternities in Albania to help health personnel save lives. 10 infant incubators for sick newborns that need special care, and 1 Bubble CPAP ( continuous positive airway pressure system) for respiratory support of sick newborns will be provided to Koco Gliozheni-Tirana , Elbasan , Fier, and Durres maternities with around 10,000 deliveries /year for all 4 maternities.
